Deciding if Microdermabrasion Is Right for You.

Last updated 7 years ago

It can be difficult finding the right skin treatment.  Every year there are more products and procedures promising younger skin, smoother skin—but how do you know if they work?  Or that they will not cause more damage than help?

If you want a minimally invasive procedure at a low cost, and with rave reviews, you might consider microdermabrasion, which is reported to work almost as an “instant facelift”.

Microdermabrasion uses small grains to buff away the top layer of your skin, which is composed of layers: the epidermis and the dermis.  The topmost layer of your epidermis is the stratum corneum, where imperfections like wrinkles and other blemishes lay.

Microdermabrasion works on the stratum corneum, which can result in minor swelling and redness post-procedure, side effects that can last up two days.  However, these are signs of your body replenishing your skin with healthy new cells.  The grains used are crystals of compounds, aluminum oxide being the preferred compound.

There is a list of skin flaws that microdermabrasion can target and minimize.

  • If you have signs of aging which includes wrinkles and spots, acne and acne scars, enlarged pores, stretch marks, or rosacea, microdermabrasion might be the right skin care choice for you.
  • However, in addition to the swelling and redness, the process can cause flaking or dryness for a few days.
  • If microdermabrasion is something that you want to make part of your skin care routine, you will likely receive a treatment once a month to keep your skin looking wrinkle and blemish-free.

An exclusive day spa will be able to offer this treatment for you, as well as other products that will enable you to keep your skin looking youthful and fresh.  They will also be able to answer any questions you have regarding the process, and help you decide if microdermabrasion is the right skin care treatment for you.
